Art and Design

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Pupils use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities, they learn to make informed value judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments.

They explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life, and in different times and cultures.

Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich our personal and public lives.

Our Art Intent

Our Art and design scheme of work aims to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. We use the Kapow scheme of work which is written by experts in their field and designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history.

Our scheme supports pupils to meet the National curriculum end of key stage attainment targets and has been written to fully cover the National Society for Education in Art and Design’s progression competencies.

Year 1 - Art & Design - Drawing - Final Pieces

Our creative juices were flowing in Year 1 this week! We were creating our final pieces of art to finish off our unit of work based on drawing. The children looked back at what they had done and made their own choices about the paper, materials and stimuli that they wanted to use. Some children were inspired by the oceans and beaches, some by autumn, some by observational drawing and some by shapes! What great artists we are!
